--Hate to say I told you so, but I said back in the summer when the Philadelphia Flyers signed Ilya Bryzgalov to a 9-year $51-million contract that they'd regret it pretty quickly. Forget his stats for a moment. Here's a guy that, basically, put himself above his Phoenix teammates last year when he said there was no way he'd follow them to Winnipeg. Then, he and his agent were very open about the fact they would go wherever they could command top dollar for his services. There was no mention about wanting to lead a team to a Stanley Cup. This is a guy playing for the wrong reasons, and I can't believe the Flyers wouldn't have picked up on this during the interview process (if there was one). Philadelphia is notorious for trying to patchwork their goaltender position. This time they hit the panic button and threw a bag of money at the guy with the best stats.
--Let me know when Paul Holmgren takes his head out of the sand. Yesterday, he added defenseman Pavel Kubina and earlier in the week Niklas Grossman. They are competent defensemen, but shots do eventually get through to the goalie and I don't see netminding stats on either of their resumes. Every time I watch a Flyer goalie (Robert Esche, Roman Cechmanek, Martin Biron, Michael Leighton, Brian Boucher, Sergei Bobrovsky, Ilya Bryzgalov...I could go on and on and on) I wonder how in the world did they ever make the NHL. All of them look like that current game is the first time they've ever strapped on pads. I wonder if they played 60 minutes with 6 skaters if they'd have better luck. Next on the Flyer trade list: Rick Nash. A goalie? You kidding me?
--My favorite teams (Flyers and Boston Red Sox) are similar animals. According to media reports last month, the Red Sox asked Roy Oswalt if he'd be willing to sign a contract for about $6-million dollars. Oswalt answered with that he's not interested in pitching in the American League East. This should tell you something about this guy's competitiveness. It's pretty much non-existent right now. What do the Red Sox do? Well, they offer $7-million, by all accounts. Hopefully, Oswalt doesn't end up a Red Sox.
--AJ Burnett is one lucky guy. Now, two teams can pay him to pitch poorly.
--I've never liked New York sports teams, but how can you dislike Jeremy Lin? It puzzles me to watch various media outlets criticize him after his first bad game. Is he not allowed to have a sub par outing? Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
--Amber Holland is the defending Canadian Women's Curling Champion; but watching the television advertisements on TSN yesterday, it's very clear Jennifer Jones' team is still the one they want to market.
